The village of Ansouis

Les plus beaux villages de france

In the Middle Ages, Ansouis occupied an ideal position to control the road between Aix en Provence and Apt. Today, this beautifully preserved village is still dominated by its magnificent castle, formerly owned by the de Sabran family. Before reaching it, you will come accross the square and will see beautifully restored houses along the streets: the oldest dating from the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. The parish church of St Martin is even older: Inside, you can admire the reliquary busts, wood panels and an altarpiece of the seventeenth century. The castle, both medieval fortress and mansion in the seventeenth century, still has a tower and fortress turrets and walls with battlements . The gardens are beautiful, decorated with carved boxwood and remarkably maintained. From the terrace, the view of the mountain Ste Victoire is superb. The village of Ansouis is ranked among the most beautiful villages in France.
